Our client is seeking a Commercial Engineer to join their team in Dublin and contribute to the successful delivery of this landmark energy infrastructure project.
Role Overview
The Commercial Engineer will support the commercial, permitting, technical and project management activities of the MaresConnect project, including the design, planning and permitting of the Irish onshore HVDC converter station and associated cable infrastructure. The role involves managing third-party interfaces, supporting procurement and engineering packages, and coordinating project reporting and stakeholder engagement.
The individual will report to the Project Director, who is also based in Dublin.
MaresConnect have offices in Dublin and Paddington, London, with flexible hybrid working arrangements.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial and Project Management
- Provide project management support in the coordination of third-party consultancy and technical service contracts.
- Assist with the management of planning, engineering and commercial advisors, ensuring deliverables are provided on schedule and within agreed budgets.
- Support the coordination of work packages contributing to the Environmental Impact Assessment Report (EIAR), planning application, EPC procurement, and grid connection activities.
- Monitor advisory and consultancy costs, budgets and forecasts, and support the administration of contracts, including variations, claims and payments.
- Support the co-ordination and delivery of the planning and consenting workstreams for the offshore and onshore development in Ireland.
- Assist in the preparation of monthly progress reports and presentations for the MaresConnect Steering Committee and Board.
EPC and Technical Coordination
- Support the technical and commercial development of EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) packages, including preparation of documentation, specifications and evaluation inputs.
- Liaise with engineering and procurement teams to ensure project requirements are clearly defined, technically sound, and commercially viable.
- Contribute to risk and value management processes to ensure optimal design, procurement and delivery outcomes.
Stakeholder and Regulatory Engagement
- Engage proactively with statutory and non-statutory stakeholders, including An Bord Pleanla, MARA, EirGrid, CRU, DECC, DHLGH, landowners, and local authorities.
- Participate in meetings with the MaresConnect project team and its advisors in Ireland, the UK, and other European countries.
- Support the preparation of submissions and responses to regulatory bodies and planning authorities.
Qualifications and Experience
- A degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, or related discipline).
- Typically [8-10] years’ experience in the energy or infrastructure sector, ideally including experience with HVDC, transmission, or major grid-connected projects.
- Strong understanding of project delivery within regulated environments and knowledge of planning and permitting processes in Ireland.
- Proven experience managing or supporting contracts, budgets, and external advisors.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
- A proactive and structured approach to problem-solving and project coordination.
